Choose a useful hierarchy

A breadcrumb should explain where a page belongs in the site’s organization. Home, Journal, and a named article is usually more helpful than exposing internal component directories. Start with the visitor’s mental model. The path does not need to reproduce every part of a storage location, especially when a content system has implementation-specific folders.

Make the visible trail work

Render the trail as navigation with an accessible label. Ancestor items should be ordinary links, and the current location should be clearly identified. Keep separators visually distinct without turning them into misleading destinations. On narrow screens, allow the trail to wrap so a long article title does not force the entire page to overflow horizontally.

Describe the same trail in data

BreadcrumbList JSON-LD represents a sequence of ListItem entries with positions, names and URLs as appropriate. Generate the visible trail and structured data from one array so they cannot quietly diverge. Use the site’s canonical public addresses rather than relative build paths or preview hostnames that only work on a developer’s machine.

Try a concrete tool hierarchy

For a color converter, a practical trail is Home → Free Tools → Color Converter. If the site later adds a genuinely useful Design Tools category page, it can become an intermediate destination. Do not insert a category in the structured data alone when visitors cannot reach or understand that category on the actual website.

Avoid invented or decorative steps

Do not add unrelated high-value terms to breadcrumb names in the hope that markup will improve relevance. A category should reflect the page’s real place in the site. Likewise, valid JSON does not make an unsupported hierarchy accurate. Breadcrumbs supplement navigation; they do not replace useful titles, content, working links or a coherent archive.

Validate on several route types

Check a tool, article, project and top-level page after export. Confirm sequential positions, correct canonical destinations and visible agreement. Run a structured-data validation tool when preparing a public release, and inspect any search enhancement reports once data is available. Eligibility and accurate markup do not guarantee that a search engine will display a particular breadcrumb presentation.
