SECURITY / THE EVERYDAY TOOLKIT
SHA-256 Hash Generator.
Calculate a SHA-256 digest of UTF-8 text on your device. This is a free utility from my portfolio toolkit, with local browser processing and no account required.
Hashes UTF-8 bytes with Web Crypto. Spaces and line breaks change the digest. SHA-256 is one-way hashing, not encryption, and is not a password-storage scheme by itself.
SIMPLE BY DESIGN
How to use SHA-256 Hash Generator
- Paste the exact text, paying attention to spaces and line endings.
- Generate the SHA-256 hexadecimal digest.
- Compare digests only when both systems use the same text encoding and normalization.
Create a reproducible fingerprint of a text input.
SHA-256 maps the UTF-8 bytes of your text to a 256-bit digest, shown as 64 lowercase hexadecimal characters. The calculation uses the browser’s Web Crypto API and runs locally. Identical bytes produce the same digest, while spaces, line endings and Unicode representation can change the input bytes. A plain digest does not prove who created a message and is not reversible encryption. Password storage needs a dedicated salted password-hashing design.
A FEW THINGS TO KNOW
A little more clarity.
Can I decrypt a SHA-256 hash?
No. Hashing is one-way. A digest cannot restore the original text and does not by itself authenticate the sender.
Is my input sent to a server?
No. This utility processes your input in your browser. URLs you paste are treated as data; the tool does not fetch them. Be careful with clipboard history on shared devices.
